PLANK [BEST 5 Music of 2014]

Deerhoof – La Isla Bonita

An incredibly varied yet strangely accessible record that seems to surprise with every turn. Deerhoof seem to have refined their knack for extracting the most bizarre sounds from their instruments and lock them into an infectious yet anxious groove.

A Winged Victory For The Sullen – Atomos

This is about as emotive and immersive as music gets. Vast, cinematic and measured orchestration sweeps you up into a glacial wonderland and leaves you completely breathless.

trans am alb 2_3

Trans Am – X

Another beast of a record from Trans Am. Ten songs that have ten very different identities and incorporate pulsating kraut grooves through to galloping metal. This record demonstrates why Trans Am are still as vital today as they were twenty years ago.

Morbus Chron – Sweven

Swedish meldodic and progressive death metal. Well considered song writing, this album includes more original ideas than most metal bands come up with in an entire career. Nice addition of clean and acoustic guitars. Great to hear a death metal record in 2014 sounding so fresh and interesting.

Earthless - From The Ages

Earthless – From The Ages

One of the best band on the planet. 3-piece psychadelic grooves that leave you in awe and speechless. Imagine if Jimi Hendrix was still alive and decided not to bother with the pop and slower stuff. These guys really know how to play and deliver rock music at it’s very best.

Human Pyramids

Human Pyramids [BEST 5 Music of 2014]

Pup - Pup

Pup – Pup

This Canadian 4 piece re-ignited my love of of indie-rock this year. Messy, Fast and incredibly Melodic. Most mornings this year I have been dancing around my bedroom air-guitarring to they’re song Resevoir.

Aphex Twin – Syro

Probably the most anticipated album of the year. I cant remember the last time I wrote the release date on a calendar and counted down the days to be first in line at the record store. It didn’t disappoint. The production of this album makes listening an absolute joy. Every sound is in exactly the right place and sounds perfect. Yes, Aphex Twin has been away for 13 years, but he is still the King of electronic music.

Gnarwolves – Gnarwolves

Finally Gnarwolves debut! I had owned (and loved) all they’re EPs.. But this is they’re first full length.. and it is amazing! Much more mature, but just as Fast & Ferocious!

TV on the Radio – Seeds

TV on the Radio know how to create fantastic albums. Sonically varied, exciting and refreshing songwriting throughout. They say the concept of an album is outdated and that it is just a collection of songs in a convenient format. This album is the Antithesis to that, this is designed to be listened to from start to finish. LOUD.

tUnE-yArDs – Nikki Nakk

I have been enchanted by tUnE-yArDs after watching her play a concert in Istanbul last summer. The most talented performer I have seen in a long time. On Nikki Nakk, she opens up her sonic palette much wider, with synths and more.. and it is all the better for it! If you can, watch this live.. She is sensational!

Alphonso Lovo - La Gigantona

Dawn of Midi – Dysnomia

When I first heard this it sounded to me like electronic music, but when I found out they were playing drums, upright bass and piano I was blown away. I love listening to it on a train at night, looking out of the window and watching the lights blur. I hope they come and play in Tokyo soon.

Alphonso Lovo – La Gigantona

Recorded in 1976 in Nicaragua and never released until 2012 when Numero (my current favorite label) re-discovered it. If you like early Santana, or even if you don’t, you will love this. Psychedelic Latin rock with extra Moog synth and space echo.

Unwound – Rat Conspiracy

I’d been listening to the ‘Eccentric Soul’ compilations and other Numero releases for a number of years, and was really surprised that when they started re-releasing under-appreciated 90’s post hardcore. Unwound have been one of my favorite bands since the age of 17, so although I had most of their music already, it is great to see it released again, packaged so beautifully and hear a few demos and other unreleased tracks.

Directorsound – Other Rivers

I briefly played in a band together with Nick and two other very good friends when we were at university together in Colchester. He has released several albums on various labels over the years, plays most of the instruments himself (guitar, piano, accordion, organ among others) on his recordings, and it is great to hear his compositions and arrangements getting more and more ambitious over the years. He came to Japan several years ago and I got to play with him again as a support member. I hope he gets another chance to come back to Japan in the future. This is his first album that he is releasing himself on Bandcamp.

William Onyeabor - Who is William Onyeabor

William Onyeabor – Who is William Onyeabor?

Nigerian synth pioneer who recorded amazing African funk in the late 70’s and 80’s before he turned his back on music completely. His music has been getting a lot of attention since it was re-discovered, but he refuses to talk about it, and his story is full of mystery. The spread of the internet keeps uncovering amazing music recorded in lesser known parts of the world from the 60’s onwards.
